Hi guys,
Just saw there are some new mics on the site.
How do they fit in the grand scheme of things?
Does this mean the ribbons are getting closer?
Thanks!

Hi earlwgreen,
The new CS mics are a step forward in the SP line. Like the new C4, the CS1 (cardioid) and CS5 (5-pattern) feature entirely new circuits and a whole different sound from our existing line. These are the mics that the Halo shockmount was originally designed for. Since then, we have changed the C-series bodies so that they are compatible with Halo's as well.
As for features, well, there is not a dearth of them. These mics can be configured in a variety of ways:
For pads: four pads. 5dB, 10dB, 15dB, 20dB.
High pass filters: 50Hz, 75Hz, 150Hz, 300Hz.
Low Pass filters: 15kHz, 7kHz, 5kHz, 3kHz.
The latter is quite interesting since one can take the inherent high mid frequency peaks of the 34mm capsule and move them around relative to the mids and lows. It's almost like having five different mics in one.
Basically, the CS are something completely new. They have a sound of their own - clear and warm - and quiet too. Also, they're pleasing to the eye. We have invested a lot of time and effort into their design and I am quite happy with the results. The sound is punchy, the highs are pleasant, the mids are present. And the mics are very dynamic - for condensers that is...the sound can be tailored in a variety of ways to suit different environments and recording tasks, the mounts are configurable to accomodate all manner of placements - coincident and near coincident stereo included.
I'll see about getting some pictures up on the site to demonstrate some of the configurations I'm talking about. We also have some fairly smokin' sound clips to put up, to give you an idea about how these things sound.
Cheers,
Brent Casey

Thanks Brent!
I've been considering a ribbon and also the T3. The T3 gets such great reviews. After I return from France in October, I plan on adding another mic to go along with the TB1. The TB1 is very nice, not tired of it, just want to have several different mics to choose from. Also, Harvey said he thought the T3 would be a good mic for me.
I will try to get a sample of what I do up in the next week or so and maybe you guys can let me know which mics would be good to add.
Oh, any info on price for the new mics?
Thanks again for the info.

Our new T3 was just reviewed by Mix Magazine. While the review is not yet in print, but soon will be, the reviewer was extremely complimentary. He really flipped for the T3 and we are very pleased...So another great review in Mix will be out soon.
The Ribbons are slow...unfortunately we are tied to someone else who designs these ribbon mics...and while the designs are very good, he has to get the design done so we can get it built. So we are at his mercy. So not time frame on the ribbons right now.

Alan,
What specific differences are there between the original and the new T3.
Actually, a friend has been using my T3 for vocals (mainly backing vox) on an album he's engineering and has been quite impressed, he commented on it being brighter than the RODE used on most of the main vocal tracks, a fact which worked well for the recordings.

Thanks Alan for the update on the ribbons. I'll check out the Mix review too. I still am leaning toward getting the T3. I hope to try one out soon.

Other than the obvious cosmetic changes and the incorporation of the new Halo Shock Mount, Brent tightened up the mic with the same changes as the C Series. Higher voltage to the capsule, some circuit changes and lower noise.
I believe there was a couple of modifications to the power supply as well. Like I said, while hard to believe, the reviewer for Mix liked the T3 better than his AKG C12 VR....soooooo he felt it was a mic that belonged at the level of the C12 VR. I say the T3 is an excellent mic that can hang with any mic in a mix.

Hanging with a C12VR isn't a great comparison for the T3. The T3 is a much better mic.

Thank you, I am glad you said that...Either way, it is a compliment....

Alan,
visited my aunt yesterday - and she got all excited to show me her newest additions to her collection - first was her new upright bass....... (she plays bass - guitar - banjo - piano and upright bass) it fit in beautifullly right along side her 1969 Ovation Typhoon III fretless bass.
Her next toy was her new Sp T3........ I told her I'd let you know she loved it.
It was a gift to her from a friend who performs bluegrass.
So you have another happy customer -
By the way - how have you been? Haven't heard from you in a while.
Sincerely,
Rod

Rod,
Another happy T3 owner...makes me happy..
I have been well Rod, and I hope you have as well. How is the book doing?
We have been very busy but have our 5 year plan firmly in place. Got to have that for the corporate bean counters. I think PMI has a lot of cool things happening right now.
The console is a smash, the A Range is in progress...Valley People is now ready for quotes and production. The new SP stuff is done, the new CS and C4 is going to rip it up...So all is good and when we start announcing where we will be going for 2008, I think more heads will turn. Or at least I hope.

Now all you have to do is get that Casey character to reply to my PM :D ............I need his expertise to figure out a problem with a 603, not mine BTW.
In the meantime I'm going back to sorting out the problems caused when our studio "flooded" last Wednesday morning. No damage to gear, etc., but two rooms of carpet has been written off by insurance..........using a "wet/dry" vacuum, we sucked over 120 litres of water out of the carpet and since putting dryers dehumidifiers in 12 hours ago I've emptied another 40 litres of water out

Chris,
Sorry to herar about your problem - floods are always a pain. The bright side is (of course) that no gear was damaged.......... Best of luck getting it cleaned up.
Sincerely,

Alan,
Book is doing well - thanks for asking.
We've sold over 3,000 copies - and sales are holding steady - so I have no complaints.
You still never commented to me on your impressions ofthe book - and after I went all out of my way to send you a copy........ (LOL.)
I'm happy for you and your companies that you're doing well - you certainly deserve it - you're a talented group of people who invest a lot of themselves into the products - and it's that little bit more (I believe) that sets you apart from the rest of the pack..........
Take care my friend........... hope to see you next AES in NYC..........
Sincerely,
Rod
