Have a client setting up a home studio for personal use. He's a songwriter, vocalist, guitarist (primarily acoustic), uses a synth or two.

He's just getting started, and while he will get a preamp down the road, he's looking at getting a mic or two to begin with.

He's got an AKG dynamic mic already.

Can anyone give some guidance regarding the following choices? Either a:

T3 or a
TB-1 and a C1

Well, all depends on money. T3 and B1 is good, as is a TB1 and B1. I say B1 because it gives another dimension to the acoustic guitar. Its quite nice actually and very forgiving, but if set up right, the B1 works great for my acoustics...I have 69 Martin D-28. 59 Epiphone Serenader, Custom Shop 12 String Taylor and more. Use the T3 on them and you have all bases coverd.

Same for vocals...The T3 is silky smooth and the B1 is neutral. Use them alone or together for more flexibility... TB1 does the trick as well, just not a flexible as the T3. So with any of those two mics, he has acoustics and vocals covered...

Thanks Alan. Interesting that the B1 is suggested rather than the C1.

With the T3 / B1 combo, would the B1 be good for differentiating the background vox? Or would the C1 really be better (though the C1 may break his budget, but doesn't hurt to ask)?

The B1 is good for vocals, but not a main stay mic you would use all the time...however, every mic could be the right mic in the right room, The B1 would do well for the backing vocals, and also as lead for a different tone.

Now its not that the C1 is not the mic to use...its just for acoustics, the B1 is much more forgiving, and sounds different. The C1 and T3 have a similar character, but the tube makes the T3 shine. The C1 needs set up for acoustics and when the sweet spot is found, while great, you can't move from that spot much...so I find the B1 more useful.

For me, I track with the T3 but when I want that different sound, I switch to the B1.
