I spent a couple of hours this evening recording a flute and after some earlier research decided to use a T3 as my primary mic approx., 500mm above and slightly forward of the flute aimed at a point about halfway along the instrument and for a secondary mic I used my Shure 330 ribbon aimed at the same point but positioned 6" in front. The signal chains were.....T3-->Meek VC1-->Tascam ATR60 1" tape..........Shure 330-->Mindprint Envoice-->ATR60.

Initial opinions (pre mixing, eq'ing, etc) are that the T3 excelled, the Shure needed buckets loads of gain so I'm reserving judgement on it until I listen with fresh ears. Also, the flute was a handmade silver "concert" grade instrument worth lots of dollars but damn, it sounded beautiful.

I have not had much experience recording flutes, but on Sax, the T3 does very well also. In fact, Gato Barbieri did his last Grammy Nominated Album using nothing but a T3 for his sax.

It was produced by Jason Miles....

I've been brushing up on my flute playing so this is interesting. I did wonder whether a C4 (accuracy) or a B3 (easy placement) would be the answer, but I keep running into this problem that whatever the source and whatever the mix, the T3 seems to kill every other mic I have. It's actually quite annoying that I have all these cool and classic dynamics and a handful of other condensers (SP, SE, AKG) to choose from, and the T3 just whoops them every time!

Well, application and room are always the deciding factor for me. The T3 is however a very underated mic for the money. :)

If you don't mind the discussion of MXL mics, then here's a great video blurb (very complimentary) of the T3.

Awesome interview! If it's the 3rd installment, where are the first two, I'd like to check them out, thanks,

They are all in my recording forum... http://mojopie.ipbhost.com/index.php?showforum=3

Just look down the thread list and each thread says "VIDEO" in all caps. :) There are six clips in all.

Steven, you might wanna edit those titles to say "VIDEO 1", "VIDEO 2", "VIDEO 3", etc., so people can figure out the order of the videos.

My take on the whole thing: God, I look old, fat, and tired, but mostly old and fat.

harvey,

ha!, old and fat..nah...idd say experienced and cool ;)

you strike me as an excepcionally humble person, despite all your knowledge, and that is the quality i most admire in ppl..sincerely.

if the opinion of a 24 year old musician (kid) amounts to anything.

i say you guys need to do a one hour thing (at least), maybe some actual mic placement in real time..i dunno, whatever, i would just love to see more of these interviews.

great job steven and harvey...really great.

Don't worry Harvey, when I see the video of you, I see an awesome guy I can only hope to end up like. The interviews are great, and I hope you continue them or make one longer one. Between these, the big thread at HR.com and all the other invaluable posts you've made at various other forums, I have learned more than I thought possible. I'm now at school in a audio engineering degree program, and I'm miles ahead of my peers mostly due to your posts. So thank you again, and please feel free to share more knowledge with us!
