Hi,

I already asked this question by mail, but never received an answer from Studio Projects.

Why is the B3 declared as "super vocal mic" while the B1 is described as "do all general purpose mic" on the Studio Projects website?
Are there substantial differences between the B1 and B3?

I already tried the C1 and the B3 - the C1 does emphasize the high frequencies too much for my voice, I sound very "thin" and sibilant with this mic and the VTB1. I also tried different mic positions and hanging the C1 upside down - the sibilance is unstoppable:)

The B3 sounded "a bit darker". Next I will try the B1 which possibly sounds "darker" and maybe will fit my voice better than the other two.

But still.....why is the B3 described as superb vocal mic while C1 and B1 are just "general purpose mics" ?

Regards, Ben

Ben,

The C1 was touted as a superb vocal mic because so many people love it for their voice. It does not work for everyone, but it does have a peak, but depending on the mic amp and room, that can be a very desireable sound.

The B3 and B1 are more neutral without the rise in the mid. So this may sound better for your ears and your room. All mics work differently in different rooms. In fact, in another room, the C1 may be the best thing for you, but the room acoustics has a lot to do with it.

Be sure to check the conditions and acoustics in your room. If you have standing waves or bass traps, you will never get a good sound. Room conditions are always a big factor, but different mics work differently so if you find one you like in your room...Use it! :)

Hi Alan.

I decided to take a look at this forum before purchasing my next mic and I'm glad I did.

Here's the deal. I am trying to use an old Stedman N90 to record a simple praise and worship CD to sell at our church. My voice is very dynamic as I sing everything from opera to pop. This CD is long over due and I was hoping to make up my mind about a mic around $100 for this project and finish it by Aug 31st.

The Stedman makes my voice sound dull and it seems to bring out the mids too much. I have tried to also use my Sennheiser e835. This mic I use live every Sunday and it does work for my voice live but it's just not detailed enough for recording. I'm using a Behringer UB1002 and Sonar 5 Producer and M-Audio BX5a monitors, I know, not the best, but.....

From what I've read, the B1 may be better since I record in a small bedroom that has been treated lightly, but still is not pro studio. Although the C1 is going to cost more I would like to hear my voice through it. Over 12 years ago I recorded in a pro studio and the mic was wonderful. I know it was a Neumann and I'm pretty sure it was the U87. It seems that the C1 might be better for my voice but, I'm not sure.

My voice is high lyric tenor and my range is about 2.5 octaves and my high notes are VERY strong. My voice is stronger and has more dynamics than say Josh Groban but that is similar to the styling I do most of the time especially "You Raise Me Up". Maybe that helps? I could also send a few files with both mics to give you an idea of what I sound like actually singing that song? Just a thought.

I just read the post about the upgrade to the B1 & C1 and now I'm not sure what to do! I really can't wait until September to finish this project.

I wish there was a place where I could try out these mics. Do you know of a place in the Orlando area that sells SP products? We have a Sam Ash, but they don't carry them.

I know these are very loaded questions, but, I'm very limited on budget right now and don't want to make a mistake.

Sorry to ramble, but any help would be appreciated.

Just one last comment. It was great to read posts from Ted Perlman. I went to his sight just to hear Burt's release. Great stuff. BTW, I've read everthing I could find from Harvey Gerst, also nice website, though most samples are not my cup of tea style wise! :)
