Upgrade my mic preamp or not?

I have a decent mic pre or two but I only paid about 600 for the most expensive one. Is going into the $1000.00+ price range going to really make that big of a difference?

Depends on what your doing. If you mix to put songs up on iTunes, then no, After mixing 24 tracks it is still hard to hear the difference between mic amps in a mix. On individual tracks it is easier to pick up which one is better, but unless you are making your money full time from recording, and tracking to better formats than MP3 at the end of the day....save your money.

If you have the $1,000.00 to spend, by all means do it. If you do, be sure your "room" is capable of taking advantage of quality. If you have an untreated room, an expensive mic amp will not help you much.
